Preventing Water Damage In The Home

Water is a homeowner’s worst nightmare when it comes to damage to their home. Many of them realize the kinds of repairs it would take to restore their home to the beauty it was once. There is much to be done once water has gotten inside the home. However, the best way to keep water damage from occurring is to prevent it from happening in the first place. This is when knowledge is necessary.

One way to avoid water damage to a home is to look for leaking faucets and pipes. If you notice any of these two common problems dripping water, it’s imperative that they are fixed right away.

It’s important to stay on constant alert for hidden leaks in pipes you don’t see. These are pipes in your walls and floors. If you’ve got wet puddles or patches on walls, ceilings and floors, you know you may have a leaking pipe. Call a qualified plumber as soon as you notice these signs to avoid water damage in your home.

Common appliances that use water and can cause this damage type include dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, washer machines, water heaters, etc. Do regular maintenance checks on these appliances for leaks as a way to thwart any water damage at home

Sinks that have blocked drainpipes can cause water damage so make sure you keep them flowing clear. Leaking bathtubs and showers will expose soft spots or discoloration to be aware of them. The water supply lines of your washers (dishes and clothes) will need to be checked for signs of damage.

Roof damage is a big reason behind water damage so check it often during the winter and rainy seasons. Make sure that it does not have any broken or damaged shingles or piled on leaves on it. Chimney and vent flashings must be looked at thoroughly for damage. Should you run into water stains, do some investigating and narrow down the source.

Along with doing preventive maintenance and inspections, you can buy leak detection and water alarm systems to detect any problems. These systems are relatively practical in the kitchen, bathroom and clothes laundry room and can be even used on certain appliances. When done so, you have the option to turn off the water supply that goes to the appliance.

The above tips are just some of the ways to stop water damage before it begins. Remember… inspection and maintenance of your pipes and appliances are the key to preventing water damage to your home. With these things, you save yourself emotional and financial stress and money.
